Dear Parents,

I would like to begin this week’s communication by informing you that the school has a new chair of governors. On Wednesday 2^nd October the governing board voted in favour of Katie Miller taking over the role from our previous joint chairs, Jo Stocks and Emma Wykes.

Katie has a wealth of experience working in education, having been involved in school leadership on and off for a couple of decades in Basildon, Greenwich, East Oxford and as Chair of Governors at Charlton over a decade ago.

Katie’s father and grandpa attended the school, she moved to the village in 2006 and as I am sure most of you know, her daughter Tilly is in FSU.

Katie is a fellow of the RSA as well as being a member of the Association of Project Managers and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications. She has been nominated as one of the top 10 women in Nokia, leading strategy projects in recent years including being fortunate to have shaped broadband markets across the world.

Katie’s experience and connections with the local community will be invaluable in supporting the school moving forward.

We have also appointed a new vice chair, Reverend Stephen Hayes. Reverend Hayes is well known to the school and local community, often leading our Open the Book Worship on Wednesdays as well as already being on the current Governing Board.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Jo and Emma for all of their outstanding leadership and commitment to the school. They will stay on the Governing Board as Associate Governors in what is a very exciting time ahead.

Educational Visits:

Every year the school receives a limited amount of funding to spend on providing your child with the best possible education.

Over the past 12 months, the school has used some of this funding to pay for all transport to sporting events within the local area. This includes for swimming lessons, quad kids, multi skills as well as tournaments against other schools. A coach journey to central Bicester and back costs the school approximately £100.  

Whilst we recognise that Educational visits can be expensive; we strongly advocate the rich learning experience that is gained by seeing these places. The wealth of knowledge and information gained by visiting places such as Stonehenge and Bletchley Park is incredibly beneficial to pupil’s learning and we ask families to support the school in paying for these trips.

All children in EYFS and Key Stage One are eligible for FREE SCHOOL MEALS!

If you are on universal credit, we can support you with additional funding for your child.

New Governors Wanted:
Are you a parent or carer of a child at the school and interested in joining the Governing Board? We have a vacancy for a parent governor starting later this term. A letter will be sent out next week informing you about the election process.

Timetable changes:
Just to make parents aware, Mrs Styler is now teaching in Year 1 and 2 on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This means that Mr Griffin will be in class teaching on a Monday and Friday.

Attendance for this week is 98.21%. 

The children were very excited to meet Mr & Mrs Merry and their magnificent horses and carriage. Peter Pan & Cookie Crumble behaved brilliantly allowing the children to give them little pats on their noses. Thank you so much for your visit.

Year 5/6 enjoyed a visit from Mr Vickers, who brought his American WW2 jeep to school for us to look at as part of our Topic.

- Yr 3/4 Mini Football Festival at the Cooper School: 17th October 2019 (the children can wear studs and because other schools will be wearing studs, it is compulsory that the children have shin pads. If they haven't got any then let us know. We do have a few spares).

Cherwell Lottery.  www.CherwellLottery.co.uk  The school association now has a page on this site, please see the launch poster.  Go onto the site and find our page, purchase a lottery ticket naming the school as the charity you wish to support, 50p will be donated to the school and you in return will be entered into the weekly draw to win £25,000.  Draws take place on Saturday evenings.  Please take the time to look and if you fancy it, try your chances. Rags to Riches bag collection. The cheque came through and I'm pleased to announce we made £201.50 from this collection - which is amazing thank you to everyone for having a clear out and donating to the school.

School Cookbook.  Please keep your recipes coming in over the weekend.   You can email,  Charltonschoolassociation@gmail.com   drop them into the office or hand to a PTA member in the playground.  It's lovely to have pictures but if it's not possible just get the recipe to us asap so it can be included in the book.  I'm sure the children will like to see their recipes in print and the book will make a great Christmas present.

Scary Disco - please return forms asap so we know how many to cater for, and don't forget there's a prize for the best costume.

Harvest Auction If you would like to donate an auction lot please let us know either through the school (office or email) or contact Charlotte Devlin on 01865 331339.  This is a real community event, posters and flyers will go around the villages but also let neighbours know, they may wish to contribute.  The Nut Tree are hosting so sure to be a great night.

Launch poster for the Cherwell Lottery

Please find some information below about the Oxfordshire County Music Service and what they have to offer to young people.

As you know (from the Newsletter on 20th Sept) we have two filing cabinets like the one in the photo below (one definitely has a key) and a metal one that need a new home. We would hate to see them go to the dump so if you know of anyone who could give them a good home, please contact the office or Mrs Bending. Thank you.

The measurements of the wooden ones are:
45cm wide
72 cm high
80 cm depth

This tuperware was left at school after the Yr 5/6 cupcakes' sale and it might belong to one of you. If so, please come and collect it at Reception.

We also have a few jumpers and one small cardigan that have found their way to Reception too. They are not named so we can't send them back to their rightful owners so if you know your child is missing a jumper/cardigan or a small white PE polo shirt, please let us know.

Please find attached a letter inviting you to nominate pupils, teachers, volunteers, achievers and initiatives to the Annual Oxfordshire Music Hub Gala Awards. It would be lovely to recognise some of the schools’ wonderful students who excel in music but who are not known to us in the county music service or through any of our music hub partners.
